FG Downplays U.S. Security Advisory, Says Nigeria Remains Safe

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris

The Federal Government has played down the recent security advisory issued by the U.S. Department of State, maintaining that the situation does not reflect the broader reality of safety and stability across Nigeria.

The advisory, which authorised the withdrawal of non-essential personnel from the U.S. embassy in Abuja and urged citizens to reconsider travel, had stirred concerns about the country’s security outlook.

But in a statement signed by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Rabiu Ibrahim, the government described the move as a routine precaution guided by internal protocols.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the advisory should not be interpreted as an indication of widespread instability.

He noted that government activities, economic operations and daily life across the country remain uninterrupted, with public institutions functioning normally.

“While we acknowledge isolated security challenges in some areas, there is no general breakdown of law and order, and the vast majority of the country remains stable,” Idris said.

He explained that ongoing security operations, backed by intelligence coordination and inter-agency collaboration, are yielding visible results in several parts of the country.

According to him, recent efforts have weakened criminal networks, reduced the activities of armed groups and improved safety in previously volatile areas.

“Our security agencies remain actively engaged in protecting lives and property, and the results of these efforts are increasingly evident,” he added.

The minister also stressed that stability has been largely sustained nationwide, with authorities focused on consolidating gains and addressing emerging threats.

On the economic front, he said Nigeria continues to present opportunities for investors, noting that ongoing reforms are strengthening confidence and improving the country’s global perception.

He added that international partners remain actively engaged with Nigeria, reflecting sustained interest in its long-term prospects.

While acknowledging that countries reserve the right to issue travel advisories based on their assessments, the government called for more balanced reporting that reflects current realities.

“We encourage our international partners to continuously engage with Nigerian authorities to obtain a more comprehensive and current understanding of the situation,” Idris said.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens and visitors, assuring that Nigeria remains open and welcoming despite existing challenges.
