Arsenal Survive Sporting Scare to Reach Champions League Last Four

Arsenal secured a place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after holding Sporting Lisbon to a tense goalless draw, sealing a 1-0 aggregate victory at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

The Premier League side progressed on the strength of their first-leg advantage, despite an uneasy performance in the return fixture that left their manager Mikel Arteta visibly relieved at full time.

Arsenal struggled to find rhythm for long spells and were pinned back by a determined Sporting side that failed to convert its chances.

The hosts started brightly but quickly lost momentum, allowing Sporting to grow into the game. Defensive lapses almost proved costly, with Francisco Trincao and Geny Catamo both coming close, the latter striking the post just before half-time.

Goalkeeper David Raya also had a nervy moment when a misplaced pass nearly gifted the visitors an opening, but Arsenal survived the scare.

Going forward, the Gunners lacked sharpness, particularly in the absence of key attacking players, and were unable to create clear-cut chances. Efforts from Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke failed to trouble the visitors, while Viktor Gyokeres found little space to operate.

Arteta made changes in the second half, introducing Kai Havertz to add energy, but Arsenal continued to look unsettled as Sporting pressed for a breakthrough.

A late penalty appeal by the visitors was waved away, allowing Arsenal to hold on and secure passage to the last four.

The result sends Arsenal into the semi-finals for the second consecutive season, a first in the club’s history. They will now face Atletico Madrid, who advanced after eliminating Barcelona.

Despite the progress, the performance raised fresh questions about Arsenal’s form, with the team winning just once in their last five matches across all competitions.

Arteta had called for a strong response before the match, but his side will need a marked improvement if they are to reach their first Champions League final since 2006.
