INEC Shifts Osun Guber Campaign Deadline, Sets August 13 Cut-Off for Political Activities
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a consequential adjustment to the campaign timeline for the Osun State governorship election, following the earlier revision of the election date.
In a statement issued on Thursday by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission said the change aligns with its revised timetable for the 2027 general elections and the rescheduling of the Osun governorship poll.
INEC had on February 26, 2026, released an updated timetable and schedule of activities, in which the Osun governorship election was moved forward by one week—from August 8, 2026, to August 15, 2026.
Following this adjustment, the Commission stated that political campaigns for the election will now officially end at midnight on Thursday, August 13, 2026, in accordance with Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which stipulates that campaign activities must cease 24 hours before election day.
“The Commission urges all political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the revised timeline,” the statement noted.
INEC emphasised that compliance with electoral guidelines remains essential to maintaining order in the electoral process and ensuring a level playing field for all contestants.
Reiterating its institutional commitment, the Commission stressed that it remains dedicated to delivering elections that are free, fair, credible, and inclusive across the country.
The adjustment comes as part of ongoing preparations aimed at improving the efficiency and credibility of Nigeria’s electoral calendar ahead of the 2027 general elections.
