The United States Secret Service has commenced an investigation into a shooting incident reported in Washington during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

The incident occurred near the Washington Hilton, where the high-profile event was being held, prompting a rapid response from security operatives stationed at the venue.

In a statement, the agency said it is collaborating with the Metropolitan Police Department to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which was reported close to a security screening checkpoint used for guests.

Officials disclosed that the gunfire was heard near the main magnetometer area, where attendees undergo routine checks before gaining access to the event.

A suspect has since been taken into custody, while authorities continue to assess the situation and determine if there were any casualties.

The Chief of Communications of the Secret Service, Anthony Guglielmi, confirmed that all individuals under protection, including the president and first lady, were safe.

“All of our protectees are safe,” he said, adding that security teams are actively investigating the incident. “We will provide updates as they become available and confirm information.”

The development has sparked fresh concerns over security arrangements at major public events in the US capital, particularly gatherings involving top government officials and prominent figures.

Authorities are expected to review existing measures as investigations continue.
