Former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi on Monday held a private meeting, fuelling ongoing consultations among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Details of the meeting were not made public, but images and videos shared by the mobilisation arm of the African Democratic Congress suggested that discussions centred on possible collaboration among opposition leaders.
The group described the engagement as a “high-level” consultation, noting that talks included the idea of presenting a single presidential candidate to challenge the ruling party in the next election cycle.
Obi, who has intensified political outreach across the country in recent weeks, was accompanied by a delegation that included Igbo elders, lawmakers from the South-East, and other political associates.
The meeting comes amid growing speculation over a potential alliance involving Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, as opposition figures explore ways to consolidate support ahead of 2027.
Monday’s talks also follow a recent gathering of opposition leaders in Ibadan, where political actors across party lines deliberated on strategies to strengthen cooperation.
The summit, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, attracted prominent figures including Atiku Abubakar, Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi.
At the end of the meeting, participants issued a communiqué indicating a willingness to build a united front, resist what they described as creeping dominance by a single party, and work towards fielding a consensus presidential candidate.
With consultations intensifying, attention is increasingly shifting to how opposition leaders will navigate internal differences and whether ongoing talks will translate into a formal political alliance ahead of the 2027 polls.
