Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has criticised the behaviour of some youths who reportedly acted indecently during the recent visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, describing the incident as unacceptable and damaging to the image of the state.
The governor’s reaction followed reports that a group of youths displayed their undergarments in public during the official engagement, an act he said runs contrary to the values and traditions of Kano State.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf distanced his administration and the people of the state from the conduct, insisting that it does not represent the character of Kano residents.
He spoke at the Third Special Prayer for Lasting Peace held at the Government House, where thousands of Qur’anic reciters gathered to pray for stability and progress in the state and the country at large.
Describing the development as disturbing, the governor said the action contradicts the moral and cultural principles embedded in his administration’s Kano First Agenda.
“Our youths should be symbols of hope and development, not tools for mockery or moral decadence,” he said, urging political actors to demonstrate responsibility in their engagements.
He cautioned politicians against encouraging behaviour that could undermine societal values, stressing the need for leaders to set the right example for younger generations.
Yusuf also called on those involved in the incident to seek forgiveness and apologise to the people of Kano for what he termed an embarrassing episode.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development, discipline, and the preservation of cultural and religious values, noting that Kano would continue to uphold its longstanding reputation for respect, hospitality, and moral integrity.
Also speaking at the event, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented by Alhaji Aliyu Harazumi, said the emirate would sustain initiatives such as Qur’anic recitations to promote peace and unity across the state.
Several Islamic scholars at the gathering echoed the call for moral reorientation and responsible leadership, stressing the importance of guiding youths towards constructive roles in society.
