National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi

The National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to destabilise opposition parties, alleging a deliberate plot to stir internal crisis within the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

Abdullahi made the allegation in a post on X on Tuesday, claiming that recent developments within the PRP followed speculation that the ADC was considering the party as a possible political platform.

According to him, the rumour gained traction after a meeting between PRP National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, and former Senate President David Mark.

He, however, dismissed claims of any planned merger or alignment, insisting that the speculation was unfounded.

“Although this is not true, it took only that single whiff of speculation for a faction to emerge almost overnight in what had been a historically tranquil political party, challenging the leadership of Baba-Ahmed,” Abdullahi said.

He argued that the development reflects what he described as a broader pattern of interference in opposition politics, warning that such actions could have far-reaching implications for the country’s democratic system.

“This is the reality of Nigeria’s shrinking democratic space under the APC,” he said, adding that attempts to attribute internal crises in opposition parties to their own weaknesses do not reflect the full picture.

“The government may continue to deny any involvement but the pattern is visible. The world can see what is happening,” he stated.

The former minister cautioned that strategies aimed at weakening opposition platforms could ultimately undermine political stability.

“A political strategy that is anchored on sabotaging every opposition platform is ultimately self-destructive,” he said. “When people are left with no options, they are, in reality, left with no choice.”

Abdullahi also referenced an earlier claim that the APC was planning to disrupt a national summit of opposition parties held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

He had alleged that opposition groups faced difficulties securing venues in Abuja and were subsequently targeted ahead of the gathering.

“We have uncovered plans by the ruling APC to disrupt the summit being held by the opposition parties in Ibadan,” he wrote, suggesting a pattern of obstruction against rival political actors.

The APC has yet to respond to the latest allegations.
