The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the government, congratulating Nigerian workers for their contributions to national development.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, the minister commended workers for their dedication and resilience, describing them as central to the country’s growth.

He urged the workforce to remain committed to their responsibilities and uphold values that promote national progress.

“Your hard work and dedication are essential to the nation’s growth and prosperity,” the minister said.

Tunji-Ojo encouraged workers to embrace patriotism, productivity and diligence, noting that these qualities are critical for sustainable development.

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and ensuring a secure environment that supports economic advancement.

The minister further called on Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding, urging them to use the occasion to reflect on unity and the role of labour in nation-building.

International Workers’ Day, celebrated annually on May 1, recognises the contributions of workers and the labour movement across the world.
