FG Declares Thursday Public Holiday for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed on Wednesday by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad as the country marks 66 years of independence.

The minister urged citizens to use the celebration to promote unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

He also called on Nigerians to draw inspiration from the country’s founding fathers by putting national interest above individual differences.

According to him, peace and stability remain essential to national development and progress.

“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He added that Nigerians’ collective determination would remain the foundation for building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

The minister also expressed optimism that the country could achieve a better future for its citizens.

He said the Federal Government, through the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, would continue efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians.

Tunji-Ojo further assured citizens that the administration would strengthen national security and improve public safety.

He said the government remained committed to creating an environment where Nigerians could live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.

The minister described Nigeria’s human capital and natural resources as major sources of strength for the country.

He urged citizens to reflect on the sacrifices of the nation’s past heroes while working towards a country that future generations would be proud of.

The October 1 holiday will allow Nigerians across the country to commemorate the attainment of independence from British colonial rule in 1960.
