The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has said it is fully prepared for the 2027 general elections, insisting that its structures remain intact and its leadership united across the country.
National Chairman of the party, Sadiq Gombe, stated this on Wednesday during a media briefing at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
He said the presence of members of the National Working Committee (NWC) at the briefing reflected cohesion within the party’s leadership and a shared commitment to its political goals.
According to him, the SDP has already commenced its schedule of activities ahead of the polls, beginning with ward congresses, followed by local government, state and zonal congresses, culminating in a national convention expected later in the year.
“We are ready for the 2027 elections. Our structures are in place and preparations are ongoing nationwide,” he said.
Gombe disclosed that party members across the country have shown interest in contesting various elective positions, including seats in state assemblies, the National Assembly, governorship offices and the presidency.
He stressed that the party would remain focused on its agenda and would not be distracted by internal disagreements, noting that political parties have constitutional authority to manage their affairs.
The chairman added that the SDP would continue to operate within the provisions of the Constitution, the Electoral Act and its internal guidelines.
On concerns surrounding names listed on the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Gombe said such issues do not determine the party’s internal leadership structure.
Also speaking, the National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, said the party had resolved its internal issues and remained disciplined and focused.
“We have put our house in order. The SDP is peaceful and firmly in control of its affairs,” he said, adding that any discrepancies on the INEC portal were administrative and should not cause concern.
The National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, said all outstanding matters within the party had been addressed through established procedures.
“There is no issue that will destabilise this party. We are united and moving forward,” he said.
A former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, also commended the leadership of the party for its level of preparedness and organisational discipline.
He cited the party’s performance in the last general elections, where it secured two Senate seats, two seats in the House of Representatives and four seats in state assemblies, as evidence of its growing strength.
Maku said strong and well-organised political parties are critical to democratic governance, expressing confidence that the SDP would continue to expand its influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party leadership reiterated its commitment to internal democracy and peaceful political engagement as it intensifies preparations for the polls.
