Troops of Sector 2, Operation HADIN KAI, have neutralised more than 250 Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters during a series of coordinated military operations across parts of Yobe and southern Borno states.
The Commander of Sector 2, Brigadier-General Beyidi Martins, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists in Damaturu on recent operational gains recorded within the sector’s area of responsibility.
He said the successes followed sustained offensive and defensive operations targeting insurgent enclaves and logistics networks in the North-East.
According to Martins, troops carried out aggressive clearance operations into previously difficult-to-access terrorist strongholds within the Timbuktu Triangle, including Buk, Chileria, Kafa, Abbagajiri and Maisani.
He stated that more than 50 insurgents were killed during direct offensive operations conducted in the Timbuktu Triangle, Bulabulin Forest and other identified hideouts.
The commander also revealed that troops successfully repelled coordinated attacks launched by terrorists against military formations in Kukareta, Forward Operating Base (FOB) Azir, Gonori, Buni Gari and Katarko, among other locations.
He noted that the failed attacks resulted in over 200 terrorist casualties.
“In the course of these operations, troops recovered over 150 assorted weapons and large quantities of ammunition from the terrorists,” Martins said.
Items recovered from the insurgents included AK-47 rifles, PKT machine guns, Rocket Propelled Grenade tubes, hand grenades, mortar bombs, motorcycles, communication equipment and materials used for the production of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
Martins added that troops also uncovered and destroyed several terrorist facilities, including detention camps, IED-making sites, life-support structures and Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices in Chileria, Buk and other locations.
He further disclosed that intelligence-led operations had disrupted the supply chain of the insurgents, leading to the arrest of more than 30 suspected collaborators, couriers and logistics suppliers.
According to him, troops intercepted drugs, petrol and medical supplies believed to have been destined for terrorist groups operating within the region.
The commander attributed the operational gains to sustained military pressure, improved intelligence gathering and growing cooperation between security forces and local communities.
He reaffirmed the commitment of troops under Sector 2 to sustaining ongoing operations aimed at eliminating the remaining terrorist threats within the North-East theatre.
