Arsenal moved within touching distance of the English Premier League title on Monday night after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium.

A first-half header from Kai Havertz proved decisive as Mikel Arteta’s men maintained their momentum heading into the closing stage of the title race.

Burnley, already relegated from the top flight, adopted a defensive approach for much of the encounter and initially frustrated the home side.

Declan Rice came close from a free kick, while Leandro Trossard struck the post with a long-range effort as Arsenal searched for an opening.

The visitors also had a rare chance of their own, but Hannibal Mejbri dragged his effort wide.

Arsenal thought they should have been awarded a penalty after Bukayo Saka went down under a challenge inside the box, but play continued.

Saka, however, made a decisive contribution moments later. His well-delivered corner in the 37th minute found Havertz, who rose above the Burnley defence to head home the winner before halftime.

The result lifted Arsenal to 82 points from 37 matches, putting them five points clear of defending champions Manchester City, who were scheduled to face AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday.

The Gunners can secure the league title if City fail to defeat Bournemouth or if Arsenal match City’s result on the final day of the season away to Crystal Palace.
