As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI) has launched a civic technology platform designed to document human rights violations, monitor shrinking civic space and strengthen accountability across Nigeria.
The platform, known as the Naija Civic Space Platform, was introduced at the National Dialogue on Civic Space and the public unveiling of the initiative held in Abuja on Friday under KDI’s Building Resilient Spaces Project.
The gathering attracted policymakers, civil society groups, media practitioners, judicial actors and development partners who examined concerns over growing threats to civic freedoms, democratic participation and accountability in the country.
Executive Director of KDI, Bukola Idowu, said the platform was created to ensure that incidents involving abuse of rights, intimidation and civic violations are properly documented and followed up.
According to him, the initiative would provide citizens, journalists, civil society groups and human rights defenders with a reliable channel to report and monitor violations before, during and after elections.
He explained that the platform was built “to strengthen, document, protect and also provide accountability framework for civic space in Nigeria.”
Idowu noted that the technology-driven system would support real-time reporting, trend analysis and coordinated responses to incidents involving violence, harassment and suppression of civic rights.
He said the platform would help move conversations around civic violations “from isolated reports to structural evidence, from concern to action, and from silence to visibility.”
The KDI boss expressed concern over reports of violence, intimidation and rights abuses linked to ongoing political party primaries across the country.
“We have seen the party primaries going on. We have seen how the rights of people have been violated, even as members, candidates and aspirants. We have seen gunshots,” he said.
He added that many cases of abuse often disappear from public attention without accountability or proper documentation.
“We do not want a situation where something happens and then, in the next one or two weeks, another thing happens and the previous issue fades away,” he stated.
Idowu disclosed that the platform was developed through consultations involving more than 120 civil society organisations across the six geopolitical zones.
A live demonstration of the platform formed part of the event, showcasing its reporting process, trend-monitoring tools and early warning coordination features.
Also speaking, Governance Adviser at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Mathew Ayibakuro, described the initiative as an important step toward strengthening democratic participation and responsive governance.
“At its core, this is about people. It is about the ability of people to engage, to assemble, to organise, and to make meaningful decisions,” he said.
Ayibakuro, while commending KDI for the initiative, stressed that civic platforms would only achieve impact when information gathered translates into concrete action and institutional response.
Participants at the dialogue also examined the role of technology in strengthening democratic resilience, protecting civic freedoms and improving responses to human rights concerns across the country.
KDI is an independent, non-governmental organisation committed to advancing citizen-led democratic development. Through data-driven advocacy, institutional strengthening, and capacity
development, KDl promotes inclusive governance, accountability, and public policy reforms that create a enabling
environment for democratic consolidation in Nigeria.
