An under-strength Super Eagles side produced a composed and energetic display on Tuesday night, defeating Zimbabwe 2-0 to book a place in the Unity Cup final at Charlton Athletic Stadium (The Valley) in London.

Despite fielding a largely unfamiliar lineup, Nigeria controlled proceedings for long spells and made their early dominance count through a bright start that set the tone for the semi-final encounter.

Coach Eric Chelle handed debuts to several players, including goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, defender Chibueze Oputa and forward Femi Azeez, as he continued his rebuilding approach with the three-time African champions.

The bold selection paid early dividends as Azeez announced himself on the international stage with a fifth-minute opener. The Millwall forward finished off a flowing team move with a powerful left-footed strike that left Zimbabwe goalkeeper Future Sibanda with no chance.

Nigeria remained in control after the breakthrough, with Azeez and midfielder Alhassan Yusuf both coming close to extending the lead moments later, but Sibanda made key saves to keep Zimbabwe in the contest.

The Warriors gradually attempted to settle into the game, with Marshall Munetsi testing Nigeria’s defensive shape, but the backline, anchored by Chibuike Nwaiwu and Igoh Ogbu held firm.

Zimbabwe’s Jordan Zemura also went close midway through the first half, while Junior Zindoga forced a crucial intervention inside the box, but Nigeria maintained their advantage into the break.

After halftime, Nigeria resumed with the same attacking intent and doubled their lead through Azeez, who completed his brace following another well-executed team move.

Philip Otele played a key role in the build-up, combining with Terem Moffi before releasing Azeez into space. The forward made no mistake, calmly slotting past Sibanda to put the game beyond Zimbabwe’s reach.

Zimbabwe pushed forward in search of a response, but Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo produced a fine full-stretch save in the 71st minute to preserve the clean sheet as the Warriors increased pressure.

Coach Chelle later introduced more debutants, including Tosin Oyedokun, Owen Oseni, Rafiu Durosinmi and Aderemi Adeoye, all of whom earned their first caps as Nigeria managed the closing stages comfortably.

The result sends Nigeria into Saturday’s Unity Cup final at the same venue, where they will face either Jamaica or India, who meet in the second semi-final on Wednesday.

The victory offered encouragement for Chelle, whose experimental squad combined discipline at the back with sharp attacking transitions to outclass a determined Zimbabwe side.
