Gunmen have abducted the younger sister of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, along with her twin sons in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The victims, identified as Olaide John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, were reportedly seized by armed men on Wednesday morning while heading to school.
The incident was confirmed in a statement issued by one of Adelabu’s media aides, Femi Awogboro, who disclosed that the abduction occurred at about 7:30 a.m.
According to him, John-Paul was on her way to drop the children at school when the attackers intercepted them and whisked them away.
“The abductors also forcefully took away her 12-year-old twin sons who were with her at the time of the incident,” Awogboro said.
He described the victim as the youngest of the five children of Olufunmilayo Adelabu.
Awogboro noted that John-Paul had previously worked with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and First Bank Pension Custodian before voluntarily retiring from service last year.
Following her retirement, he said, she relocated to Ibadan with her children while making arrangements to join her husband, John Paul, who had earlier moved to the United States.
The family spokesman said security agencies were immediately informed after the incident and had since commenced investigations.
“We are pleased to confirm that security operatives have swung into action and preliminary investigations have commenced in earnest,” he stated.
“Efforts are currently ongoing to ensure the safe rescue of the victims and the apprehension of those responsible for this heinous crime.”
Awogboro said the development has left Adelabu and other family members deeply worried but expressed confidence that security agencies would secure the release of the victims.
He appealed to the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified reports that could hinder ongoing rescue operations.
“The family respectfully appeals to members of the public to remain calm, avoid speculation, and refrain from circulating unverified information that may jeopardize ongoing security operations,” he said.
He further urged anyone with useful information regarding the incident to contact security agencies through appropriate channels, assuring that the family would continue to cooperate fully with investigators and keep the public informed of any major developments.
