The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed a surveillance aircraft to support efforts to locate and rescue teachers and pupils abducted from communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed the development during a courtesy visit by representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff and the Air Officer Commanding Logistics Command, according to a statement issued on Sunday by NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.
Makinde said the Air Force responded swiftly after the abduction was reported, deploying an aerial surveillance platform that has since been providing intelligence to security agencies involved in the rescue operation.
According to the governor, information gathered from the surveillance missions has played a key role in monitoring developments and coordinating efforts aimed at securing the victims’ release.
“The NAF promptly deployed an aerial surveillance platform immediately after the abduction was reported, providing critical intelligence to support search-and-rescue operations,” he said.
He added that intelligence generated from the flights had continued to assist security agencies in tracking the kidnappers and supporting ongoing rescue efforts.
The governor appealed to residents of the affected communities and the wider public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts to secure the victims’ freedom continue.
He assured that the government was deploying all available resources to ensure a successful outcome.
Makinde also commended the Chief of the Air Staff and the Nigerian Air Force for their prompt intervention, noting that the surveillance aircraft was provided while Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial assets are still being assembled at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Lagos.
“The Air Force made the surveillance platform available while Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial assets are still being assembled at the NAF Base, Lagos,” he said.
The governor explained that the state acquired the aircraft after consultations with the Nigerian Air Force to ensure access to technical support, maintenance services and pilot training.
He expressed confidence that the new assets would strengthen security operations in Oyo State and neighbouring areas once they become fully operational.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to supporting efforts to secure the release of the abducted teachers and pupils.
He said the service remained in solidarity with the Oyo State Government and would continue collaborating with other security agencies to tackle security challenges and ensure the safe return of the victims.
Suleh also praised the state government for its support for Nigerian Air Force projects and infrastructure development.
The deployment comes weeks after gunmen attacked three schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities on May 15, abducting 39 pupils and seven teachers, bringing the total number of victims to 46.
The incident renewed concerns over the safety of schools and the growing threat of attacks on educational institutions in parts of the country.
NAF said it would continue working with relevant stakeholders to protect lives and property while supporting efforts to bring the abducted victims home safely.
