The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended prominent lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, from the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings instituted against him.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir Akanbi.
According to the statement, the suspension was approved during the committee’s 173rd General Meeting held on June 23, 2026.
The LPPC said the action was taken in line with Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and all matters relating to the rank.
It explained that the suspension would remain in effect pending the conclusion of proceedings before its Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee, as well as other related matters connected to the case.
The committee, however, did not disclose details of the allegations or the disciplinary issues that led to the decision.
The development marks a significant turn in the career of the senior lawyer, who is one of the country’s most prominent legal practitioners and public affairs commentators.
Ozekhome, a constitutional lawyer and human rights advocate, has been a familiar figure in Nigeria’s legal and political landscape for decades, often participating in high-profile litigation and national debates on governance and constitutional matters.
The LPPC is the statutory body responsible for the conferment, regulation and discipline of holders of the prestigious SAN rank.
More details on the disciplinary proceedings are expected to emerge as the matter progresses.
