In the theater of democratic politics, few achievements are as rare or as beautiful as a consensus built on both justice and undeniable merit. All too often, political transitions force a painful compromise between regional equity and leadership capacity. We are frequently told that we must choose between zoning a position for fairness or ignoring geography to seek the most qualified mind.
With the emergence of Rt. Hon. Engr. Salihu Yakubu-Danladi as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 elections, Kwara State has shattered this false dichotomy. His candidacy is neither a product of mere tokenism nor an accident of political geography. It is, in every sense, a triumph of capacity and equity.
As a son of Kwara South, a district with its own deep political aspirations, I believe true statesmanship requires looking past local borders to recognize when a transcendent moment has arrived for our state. The political clock is ticking, and it reads Danladi ’O’ Clock.
The Imperative of Equity: Kwara North’s Rightful Turn
No democracy can thrive without a foundation of fairness and inclusion. Since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule twenty-seven years ago in 1999, Kwara State has rotated its highest office with a sense of mutual respect. Yet, a glaring historical imbalance has remained. Throughout nearly three decades of democracy, Kwara North has not produced a governor.
In the spirit of power rotation, justice, and the peaceful co-existence that defines our “State of Harmony,” no region is more rightfully positioned to lead the state next than Kwara North. However, while rotation satisfies the requirements of equity, the demands of governance require a candidate of unparalleled capacity. It is one thing to come from the most preferred region; it is another thing entirely to be the most preferred and qualified individual for the task ahead.
Danladi represents the flawless intersection of these two realities. He is the answer to a long-awaited regional right, but more importantly, he possesses the brilliant intellectual and leadership capacity required to move Kwara beyond the phenomenal development threshold established by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
A Proven Architect of Progress
Danladi’s journey to this moment is defined by service, intellectual rigor, and an astute understanding of human management. Between 2010 and 2018, he brought his professional training to bear as a dedicated staff member at the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna. When the clarion call of his people sounded, he voluntarily resigned from academia, demonstrating a shrewd leadership instinct and a profound desire to make a tangible difference.
Elected in 2019 to represent the Ilesha-Gwanara constituency in the Baruten Local Government Area, Danladi instantly stood out among his peers. His calm demeanor, structural thinking, and infectious patriotism earned him the ultimate respect of his fellow lawmakers, who chose him to lead both the 9th and 10th Kwara State House of Assembly as Speaker.
As a professional engineer, Danladi brought a builder’s exactness to the legislature. Under his watch as Speaker, the Assembly transformed into an engine of high-impact governance, passing roughly fifty bills into law and critically debating countless matters of general public importance.
His legislative brilliance is closely matched by his grassroots impact. In his constituency, he has been a true “game-changer”—spearheading the rehabilitation of over 250 kilometers of roads, providing more than 300 boreholes to alleviate water scarcity, and completely renovating vital classrooms and healthcare facilities, all while driving robust human capacity development programs for youth and women. At a time when Kwara needs to solidify and expand its infrastructural networks, having a tested engineer at the helm of affairs is not just a luxury; it is an absolute necessity.
A Substantial Consensus from Aso Rock to the Grassroots

The institutional momentum behind Danladi’s candidacy speaks volumes about the unifying nature of his character. Following a transparent and highly competitive primary election, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq formally presented Engr. Danladi-Salihu to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The warm reception and explicit backing of the Presidency signaled a historic milestone: Danladi is the first candidate from the Borgu Kingdom to secure a ruling party’s gubernatorial ticket since 1999.
This powerful national recognition mirrors an overwhelming wave of internal support within Kwara. His colleagues in the House of Assembly have passionately reaffirmed their total solidarity, while stakeholders across various local government areas have echoed their confidence in his vision. Perhaps most telling of all was the high-powered delegation of the Kwara State Traditional Rulers Council who travelled to present their royal endorsement to the President. When revered monarchs from the South, Central, and North speak with one voice for a young leader, it proves that Danladi is a bridge across our regional divides.
Governor AbdulRazaq deserves immense praise for looking past personal considerations and choosing to back a leader of Danladi’s caliber to consolidate and advance his legacy.
The Slogan for a New Era: Ìtèsíwájú Kwara
In 2019, our state was united by the battle cry of “Ó tó gẹ́”; a necessary movement that broke stagnant political structures. But a state cannot live in a perpetual cycle of tearing down; we must build. Today, our realities have changed. We are no longer trying to escape the past; we are actively racing toward a prosperous future. For 2027, our new collective anthem must be deep, focused, and forward-looking: “Ìtèsíwájú Kwara: Ẹ Tẹwọgba!”(Kwara’s Progress: Embrace It!)
To the other distinguished APC aspirants who competed for this ticket: your capacity is valued and your patriotism is clear. But politics dictating that a party can only field one flagbearer, the time has come to dissolve past rivalries, unify our strengths, and work together as a formidable team to ensure the party’s ultimate success.
In fact, I extend this appeal further to our brothers and sisters in opposition parties. Let us recreate the legendary political maturity of Nigeria’s 1999 presidential election. Back then, the entire nation agreed that in the spirit of absolute fairness, the major political parties should field candidates from the South-West. Kwara should emulate this golden standard in 2027. Let us collapse partisan divisions into a shared agenda of historical equity by throwing our collective weight behind Danladi.
Kwara has found its “Joseph”; a leader possessed of immense wisdom, technological precision, and youthful energy. With Rt. Hon. Engr. Salihu Yakubu-Danladi, Kwara is undeniably in safe, expert hands. It is time for all Kwarans to embrace the future.
