Morocco produced a clinical second-half display to eliminate co-hosts Canada 3-0 in Houston on Saturday, booking the first place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A brace from midfielder Azzedine Ounahi and a stoppage-time strike by substitute Soufiane Rahimi sealed an impressive victory for the Atlas Lions, who will now face the winners of the Round of 16 clash between France and Paraguay in the last eight.

The result brought an end to Canada’s campaign on home soil despite a spirited start in front of their supporters.

Jesse Marsch’s side began brightly and almost took an early lead through Jonathan David, whose effort was brilliantly denied by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Tani Oluwaseyi also squandered a gilt-edged opportunity as Canada piled pressure on the African champions in the opening exchanges.

Morocco suffered an early setback when forward Ismael Saibari was forced off with an injury in the 23rd minute. However, his replacement, Rahimi, would later make a telling impact.

After a goalless but fiercely contested first half, Ounahi finally broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart, drilling a precise finish into the bottom corner following a well-worked free-kick routine.

Canada pushed forward in search of an equaliser but repeatedly found Morocco’s disciplined defence difficult to break down.

Ounahi struck again in the 82nd minute, finishing off a swift counterattack to double Morocco’s advantage before Rahimi completed the rout deep into stoppage time after another devastating breakaway.

The encounter was as physical as it was competitive, with English referee Michael Oliver repeatedly reaching for his pocket as tempers flared.

A confrontation involving Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi and Canada’s Richie Laryea midway through the first half highlighted the intensity of the contest, while the match eventually produced eight yellow cards—five for Morocco and three for Canada—as both teams battled aggressively for control.

Canada’s captain, Alphonso Davies, who had struggled with fitness during the tournament, started on the bench for the second consecutive knockout match before later coming on, but he could not inspire a comeback.

Morocco’s journey to the quarter-finals has once again underlined the growing strength of African football. The Atlas Lions, semi-finalists at the 2022 World Cup and reigning African champions, survived a tense penalty shootout against the Netherlands in the Round of 32 before dispatching Canada with an accomplished performance.

Canada, meanwhile, enjoyed their finest World Cup campaign after advancing beyond the group stage and defeating South Africa in the Round of 32 to reach the knockout phase for the first time. Their dream, however, ended against a more clinical Moroccan side.

Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi praised his players’ composure after weathering Canada’s early pressure, while Canada manager Jesse Marsch described his squad as “Canadian heroes” despite the defeat.

With the victory, Morocco become the first nation to book a place in the World Cup quarter-finals, where they will meet either France or Paraguay as they continue their bid for another historic run on football’s biggest stage.
