Operatives of the Bauchi State Police Command have taken into custody a 45-year-old resident of the state capital, Muhammad Makama, over the alleged sexual assault of his neighbour’s eight-year-old daughter.
The suspect was apprehended following an official complaint lodged by the victim’s 32-year-old mother at the ‘E’ Division in Yelwa, Bauchi, late Tuesday evening.
According to police sources, the mother reported that Makama cornered the young girl at their shared residence in the Dorawan Dillalai area of the metropolis, luring her into his private apartment where he committed the act.
Confirming the incident in an official statement, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, stated that law enforcement acted swiftly upon receiving the report.
“The victim was immediately escorted to the police clinic for a comprehensive medical examination and urgent clinical attention,” Habib noted.
The police spokesperson further revealed that the suspect himself required medical treatment at the same facility. Before police operatives could arrive at the scene, an aggrieved mob from the community had tracked down Makama and subjected him to a severe beating. He was treated for injuries sustained during the assault and subsequently discharged into police custody.
To ensure a meticulous inquiry, the case has been officially transferred to the Gender Laboratory under the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for forensic evaluation and subsequent prosecution.
Reacting to the development, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, strongly condemned the act, describing it as heinous. He reassured members of the public that the command would conduct a transparent investigation to ensure justice is fully served.
