The Nigeria Police Force has arrested Adeniyi Adeyemi, who claims to be the Director-General of the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), over ongoing investigations into the activities of the organisation.
Adeyemi was apprehended by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Osun State following the execution of a bench warrant issued against him.
Confirming the arrest on Tuesday, the Personal Assistant to the Force Public Relations Officer, ASP Aminu Koji, said the suspect was currently in police custody.
“We have just confirmed the arrest of Mr. Adeniyi Adeyemi by a team of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Osun State,” Koji said.
He, however, declined to disclose further details surrounding the operation, noting that Adeyemi would be subjected to due legal process.
The arrest comes amid investigations into the activities of the purported Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, an organisation the Federal Government had earlier disowned.
Government authorities have maintained that the council is unauthorised, prompting security and anti-corruption agencies to begin separate investigations into its operations.
The Presidency had previously distanced itself from the organisation, insisting that it had no official recognition or mandate from the Federal Government.
The latest development also follows reports that President Bola Tinubu directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate Adeyemi over the activities of the alleged council.
Adeyemi had reportedly claimed on Monday that his life was under threat, a development that came shortly before his arrest by police operatives.
The police have yet to disclose the specific allegations against the suspect, but officials said investigations are ongoing and further details would be made public as the case progresses.
