TCN, Transport Ministry Move to Connect Kano Railway Facilities to National Grid

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Federal Ministry of Transportation have commenced plans to connect the Kano Railway Station and other railway operational facilities to the National Grid as part of efforts to ensure stable electricity supply for rail operations.

The initiative was the focus of a strategic stakeholders’ engagement held on July 7, 2026, at the TCN Kano Regional Headquarters, where participants reviewed technical and operational requirements for the proposed grid connection.

According to TCN, the planned connection is expected to provide reliable electricity to railway infrastructure in Kano, improve operational efficiency and support the Federal Government’s drive to strengthen critical national infrastructure.

Discussions at the meeting centred on the technical requirements for the project, implementation timelines, operational coordination, system reliability and the responsibilities of the various stakeholders involved in its execution.

The participants also considered measures to ensure compliance with grid standards, network safety and the seamless integration of the railway facilities into the national transmission network.

Speaking during the engagement, the General Manager (Transmission), Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, underscored the need for continued collaboration among all parties to ensure the successful delivery of the project.

He said, “Sustained collaboration among all stakeholders and early technical engagement will facilitate smooth project execution and guarantee a dependable power supply to the railway facilities.”

The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to working together to deliver the project in line with the Federal Government’s infrastructure development objectives.

They expressed confidence that the planned grid connection would enhance the efficiency of railway operations, improve service delivery in the transport sector and support ongoing efforts to strengthen critical infrastructure through reliable electricity supply.

Representatives of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Kano Region, the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), project consultants Team Nigeria and the project contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), attended the meeting.
