The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and AKADEMIYA2063 have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), climate and weather data analytics, climate information services and evidence-based research aimed at strengthening climate resilience, agricultural productivity and food security in Nigeria.

The agreement was signed in Abuja by NiMet Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). AKADEMIYA2063 was represented by its Managing Director, Dr. Debisi Araba, and Director of Data Intelligence & Governance and National Representative for Senegal, Dr. Racine Ly.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Anosike said the partnership reflects NiMet’s determination to prepare for the future through digital innovation and the adoption of artificial intelligence.

He disclosed that the agency had already established an AI Research Team to explore how artificial intelligence and machine learning could improve weather forecasting, climate services and operational efficiency.

“NiMet is positioning itself for the future by embracing artificial intelligence and digital innovation,” he said, adding that the collaboration with AKADEMIYA2063 would strengthen the agency’s ongoing efforts to modernise its services.

Anosike noted that improved climate intelligence would support farmers, policymakers and disaster management institutions by providing more accurate forecasts, early warnings and planning tools.

Dr. Araba described the agreement as a significant step towards enhancing Africa’s capacity in data, analytics and evidence-based policymaking.

He said the combination of AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise in data intelligence and policy research with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities would produce practical solutions for climate resilience, food security and sustainable development.

According to him, the partnership is designed not only to improve climate services but also to support better agricultural planning and more informed public policy decisions.

Under the MoU, both organisations will work together on the application of artificial intelligence to climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting, early warning systems and evidence-based decision-making.

The collaboration is expected to strengthen AI-enabled climate services and support agricultural planning across Nigeria.

To drive implementation, the two institutions agreed to establish a Joint Technical Committee that will work closely with NiMet’s AI Research Team.

The committee will identify priority areas for collaboration, coordinate activities under the agreement and develop joint initiatives focused on climate services, AI research, innovation and sustainable development.

The partnership comes as Nigeria and other African countries seek to improve the use of climate data and digital technologies to address the growing impact of climate change on agriculture, livelihoods and food systems.
