Police Arrest 40-Year-Old Man Over Alleged Rape of 96-Year-Old Woman in Ekiti

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a 40-year-old man over the alleged attempted rape and assault of a 96-year-old woman at Emure-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The arrest was one of several operational successes recorded by the police across six states on Sunday, August 9, 2026, according to the State-by-State Executive Summary of Nigerian Police Force Operational Success for Tuesday, August 10, 2026, signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.

The suspect was arrested by police operatives in connection with the alleged assault and attempted rape of the elderly woman.

According to the police, the suspect was taken into custody and reportedly confessed to the offence.

The victim was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention, while detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Ado-Ekiti, commenced investigation into the incident.

The police did not disclose the identity of either the suspect or the victim.

In Benue State, police operatives foiled an attack by armed bandits on Jootar Police Station in Ukum Local Government Area on August 9.

The operatives responded swiftly to the attack and engaged the assailants with superior firepower, forcing them to flee.

No casualty was recorded among police personnel during the encounter, while the State Criminal Investigation Department, Makurdi, is investigating the incident.

In another operation in Benue, police foiled an alleged armed robbery operation along the highway at Ayati Village, Gwer East Local Government Area.

The police said operatives responded to a distress call that suspected armed robbers had blocked the highway, leading to a gun duel between the suspects and the responding officers.

The suspects eventually fled into a nearby bush, abandoning a locally fabricated revolver, four rounds of live cartridges and a mobile phone.

The police subsequently dismantled the roadblock and restored unhindered access to the highway.

In Akwa Ibom State, police operatives arrested eight suspects during raids on suspected criminal hideouts based on credible intelligence.

Various suspected illicit drugs were recovered during the operations.

In a separate operation, detectives arrested three suspected cultists allegedly gathered at Ikot Ubok Udom Village in Nsit Atai Local Government Area.

One single-barrel gun and one pump-action gun were recovered from the suspects.

The State Criminal Investigation Department, Uyo, is handling the investigation.

In Imo State, 11 suspected militia members were arrested after police operatives stormed a suspected militia hideout at Odumara Orodo in Mbaitoli Local Government Area.

The operation, conducted on August 8 following intelligence received by the police, also led to the recovery of a charm-fortified bullet-proof vest reportedly made of wood.

The suspects and recovered exhibit were taken into custody as the State Criminal Investigation Department, Owerri, investigates the case.

Meanwhile, in Ogun State, three suspects were arrested over the alleged theft of company cable wires at a quarry in Odeda Local Government Area.

The suspects were reportedly identified through closed-circuit television footage before their arrest by police operatives on August 9.

The police said the suspects were taken into custody for interrogation, while efforts were ongoing to recover the stolen cables and establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft.

The Force said the operations formed part of its continuing efforts to prevent criminal activities, respond to distress calls and apprehend suspects involved in violent and other crimes across the country.

The various cases are being investigated by the respective State Criminal Investigation Departments.
