Alausa Unveils 41 UniPods to Drive Nigeria’s Shift to Knowledge Economy

The Federal Government is planning to establish 41 University Innovation Pods (UniPods) across tertiary institutions as part of efforts to turn research and innovation into jobs, investment and sustainable economic growth.

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the initiative was designed to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of transforming Nigeria from a resource-dependent economy into a knowledge-based one capable of supporting the administration’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.

Alausa disclosed this during a meeting with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), seven vice chancellors and other stakeholders on the sustainability of the UNDP Innovation Hubs.

He said eight UniPods had either been commissioned or were ready for commissioning, with three already operational at the University of Lagos, Nasarawa State University and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.

The minister explained that the innovation centres were being established around areas with strategic economic relevance to their host states and regions.

Among the specialised centres are the Blue Economy UniPod in Akwa Ibom, AgroTech in Benue State University, Resilience Tech in Borno State, GovTech at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and Industrial Tech in Plateau State.

Alausa said the success of the initiative would not be judged by the number of buildings constructed or equipment installed, but by the innovations, businesses, jobs and economic opportunities generated from them.

He said the government was determined to move Nigeria’s university research system away from an environment where research was conducted largely for academic advancement, towards one where discoveries could be commercialised and deployed to solve real-world problems.

“The UniPods must turn research and innovation into jobs, investment and real economic impact,” the minister said.

He cited the MineTech UniPod at Nasarawa State University as an example of the possibilities offered by the initiative, noting that researchers there had developed geospatial maps indicating the location and depth of deposits of minerals including lithium, gold and bauxite.

According to him, such discoveries could become major economic assets if investors were connected with researchers and given appropriate pathways to commercialise the findings.

Alausa said the government had already reduced some of the initial risks by providing infrastructure, equipment and technical capacity, adding that the next phase should focus on attracting private investment and taking innovations to the market.

He said the Federal Ministry of Education was working with UNDP and Tech4Dev to expand the UniPod network to about 41 centres over the coming years.

The minister stressed that the centres could not remain permanently dependent on government grants or donor funding, insisting that they must develop sustainable business models capable of generating revenue, supporting their host universities and attracting skilled researchers and entrepreneurs.

A governance framework is being developed by the Ministry and UNDP to guide the operation of the centres, while eligible UniPods would be allowed to establish commercial accounts in line with existing government guidelines for university research centres.

Alausa explained that part of the revenue generated could be retained by the centres to sustain their operations, while another portion would be used to support targeted technological development within their host universities.

The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, said the UniPods should be regarded as instruments for accelerating Nigeria’s industrialisation rather than merely academic facilities.

She said the focus should shift from measuring research only by the volume of knowledge produced to determining the value, products, services, businesses and employment opportunities that could emerge from it.

Ahmad urged universities to expose students and researchers to industrial processes and commercialisation, enabling innovative ideas to move beyond laboratories and become marketable products and services.

She also called for the facilities to be accessible to innovators from other universities, subject to appropriate procedures, arguing that the benefits of the initiative should not be restricted to students and researchers within host institutions.

The minister of state described the UniPods as a national opportunity for young Nigerians with innovative ideas and the capacity to contribute to economic development.

The Resident Representative of UNDP Nigeria, Elsie Attafuah, commended the Federal Ministry of Education for positioning education as a driver of innovation, jobs and competitiveness.

Attafuah said changes in the global development environment meant countries could no longer depend solely on external sources of wealth and growth, making innovation and local capacity increasingly important.

She described the UniPods as potential engines for implementing Nigeria’s reform agenda, creating employment and enabling citizens to turn ideas and skills into economic opportunities.

She pledged UNDP’s continued support for the initiative, including facilitating South-South cooperation and possible collaboration with countries such as India.

Attafuah also said the agency would support the emerging network of UniPods in areas including governance, financing and sustainability.

Alausa assured stakeholders that the Education Ministry would continue working with UNDP, Tech4Dev, universities and other partners to establish effective governance and financing arrangements for the innovation centres.

He said the ultimate objective was to ensure that investments in education, research and technology translated into practical solutions, viable businesses, jobs and a highly skilled workforce.

The minister said the UniPods were therefore expected to play a central role in translating the Federal Government’s education and technology investments into tangible economic opportunities and supporting Nigeria’s transition to a knowledge-based economy.
