The Association of Corporate Editors (ACOE) has urged Nigerian youths to reject political violence and thuggery and take an active role in the 2027 general elections, stressing that their participation is critical to shaping the country’s future.
The Chairman of ACOE, Sola Akingboye, made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja to mark the 2026 International Youth Day.
Akingboye said young Nigerians remained central to the country’s social, economic and political development, urging them to remain focused, resilient and committed to building a better society.
He, however, warned youths against allowing themselves to be used for violence or other destructive activities, saying such actions could jeopardise their futures and deprive the country of their talents and potential.
The ACOE chairman also called on young Nigerians to take greater interest in governance and democratic processes, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
He urged them to participate actively and turn out in large numbers to exercise their civic responsibilities, stressing that youth involvement in governance was necessary to ensure that their aspirations and interests were reflected in national decision-making.
Akingboye also appealed to the older generation to create more opportunities for young people to demonstrate their abilities and contribute meaningfully to national development.
He said Nigerian youths possessed the energy, creativity and capacity to drive positive change but needed encouragement, mentorship and opportunities to realise their potential.
The ACOE chairman commended the National Youth Council of Nigeria and the Ministry of Youth Development for their efforts towards making young Nigerians more productive and resourceful, urging stakeholders to sustain support for youth-focused programmes.
International Youth Day is observed annually to draw attention to issues affecting young people and highlight their contributions to society.
Akingboye urged Nigerian youths to use this year’s observance to renew their commitment to peace, responsible citizenship, innovation and national development, assuring them of continued support from stakeholders across the country.
