President Bola Ahmed Tinubu currently enjoys the strongest route to re-election in 2027, ahead of his major challengers, Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, according to a political assessment by ADSC META.
The report, signed by the organisation’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Sir Victor Walsh Oluwafemi, examined the evolving political landscape ahead of the election, taking into account governance, party structures, coalition building, voter behaviour, economic conditions, institutional influence and leadership capacity.
It identified Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Obi of the New Democratic Congress (NDC) and Atiku of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the three major figures shaping the emerging presidential contest.
ADSC META said its assessment was based on prevailing political realities rather than partisan considerations, noting that the incumbent currently possesses the clearest institutional and organisational advantages.
“Following an extensive review of governance performance, political structures, coalition dynamics, voter behaviour, economic indicators, institutional influence, and leadership capacity, ADSC META finds that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presently maintains the strongest pathway towards securing a second term in office,” the report stated.
The report identified incumbency as Tinubu’s biggest advantage, pointing to his access to government institutions, national visibility, policy influence and the extensive political network available to a sitting president.
It also credited Tinubu’s long experience in political organisation and coalition building, arguing that his role in building alliances and managing competing interests had strengthened his position ahead of the election.
According to the report, the APC’s nationwide structure, including governors, legislators, local government networks and other political stakeholders, gives the president a formidable electoral base.
However, ADSC META acknowledged that Tinubu faces serious economic challenges that could affect his re-election bid.
It cited persistent inflation, high food prices, the impact of fuel subsidy removal and the initial uncertainty arising from foreign exchange reforms as major sources of public dissatisfaction.
“These concerns are legitimate and should not be dismissed,” the report said, while arguing that voters could ultimately judge the administration on whether its reforms produce visible improvements before the election.
It said falling inflation, improved infrastructure, increased investment, job creation and stronger economic confidence could help the administration turn some of its current vulnerabilities into electoral advantages.
On Obi, the report described the former Anambra State governor as a major force in contemporary Nigerian politics, particularly among young people, professionals, entrepreneurs and Nigerians in the diaspora.
It identified his perceived credibility, fiscal discipline and reform-oriented image as his major strengths.
“His greatest political asset remains credibility,” the report stated.
But the organisation said Obi’s principal challenge was transforming his strong popular following into a nationwide political structure capable of winning votes across thousands of wards and polling units.
“Yet national elections demand more than popularity,” it said, adding that effective grassroots mobilisation, coalition management, regional acceptance and vote protection would be critical to his prospects.
The report similarly acknowledged Atiku’s extensive political experience, national network and familiarity with economic and executive matters.
It, however, said the former vice president could face difficulties among voters seeking generational change and an alternative to the established political order.
“Each candidate possesses significant leadership qualities. However, elections are not won solely by competence. They are won through a combination of competence, structure, alliances, timing, public sentiment, and organisational strength,” the report said.
ADSC META further identified opposition unity as a potentially decisive factor in the 2027 contest.
It argued that continued division among opposition parties and candidates could strengthen Tinubu’s position by splitting votes and weakening the emergence of a single national alternative.
“Conversely, a disciplined and united opposition coalition could substantially alter the political landscape,” it stated.
In its overall assessment, the organisation concluded that Tinubu presently holds the strongest strategic position among the leading contenders because of his incumbency, party machinery, political alliances, institutional reach and electoral organisation.
It, however, cautioned that the assessment should not be regarded as a prediction of the election result, stressing that economic conditions, political alliances and public opinion could change significantly before 2027.
“The road to 2027 remains open. The opposition still possesses opportunities to redefine the contest. Yet as matters stand today, the incumbent remains the candidate to beat,” the report stated.
