Gunmen Kill NOUN Bursar in Zamfara

The University Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria(NOUN), Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, has been killed in a shooting incident in Zamfara State.

Marafa reportedly came under attack while returning from Gusau on Sunday, September 6, 2026, according to a statement issued by the university.

The statement, signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi, said the institution received news of the killing with shock.

“According to information available to the University, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau,” the statement said.

The university did not disclose the location of the attack or explain the circumstances surrounding the shooting. It also did not identify the suspected attackers.

Marafa joined the institution as an administrator and served in various capacities before his appointment as bursar.

He assumed the position in September 2026, shortly before his death.

NOUN described the late bursar as a dedicated administrator whose death had left a deep void in the university community.

“The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the institution said.

The university extended its condolences to his family, relatives, friends and colleagues, while praying for strength for them during the period of mourning.

It said the family would announce details of his burial after completing the necessary arrangements.

The killing comes amid continuing security concerns in parts of Zamfara, where armed attacks and criminal activities have repeatedly disrupted movement and economic activities.
