Mohammed Sani Abacha has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Kano State in the 2027 general election.

Abacha, son of former Head of State, the late General Sani Abacha, secured the ticket at a fresh stakeholders’ meeting where party members affirmed his candidature.

The development came after Muhammad Bello Dalhatu, who defeated Abacha in the party’s earlier governorship primary, withdrew from the race.

The party also named its factional chairman in Kano, Alhaji Ado Kibiya, as Abacha’s running mate for the election.

At the May 2026 primary, chaired by Umar Danjani Hadejia, Dalhatu polled 2,233 votes against Abacha’s 749 votes to secure the party’s ticket.

However, the party held another primary on Wednesday following Dalhatu’s withdrawal. Delegates subsequently affirmed Abacha as the replacement candidate.

Speaking at the exercise, the Kano State PDP Chairman, Dr Bello Gambo Bichi, said the process followed consultations and reconciliation among party stakeholders.

Bichi said the party complied with its constitution, guidelines and relevant electoral provisions in replacing Dalhatu.

He explained that the withdrawal triggered the need for another primary to nominate a replacement candidate.

According to him, Abacha emerged as the consensus choice after the party confirmed that he met the requirements for nomination.

Bichi urged party leaders, stakeholders, members and supporters to unite behind the candidate and work towards strengthening the party in Kano.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the PDP Governorship Replacement Primary Election Panel, Dr Abba Abdullahi, said the exercise complied with the party’s rules and applicable electoral laws.

Abdullahi said accredited party members affirmed Abacha’s candidature during the replacement process.

He added that the party had verified Abacha’s eligibility to contest the Kano governorship election under its rules and the relevant electoral requirements.

The latest development changes the party’s earlier arrangement after Dalhatu had secured the ticket in May.
