The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol sold by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited(NNPCL), with public transport operators to receive priority under the arrangement.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing in Abuja on the government’s position on fuel prices and subsidy-related concerns.
Oyedele explained that the initiative should not be regarded as a return to petrol subsidy, stressing that the government would simply make the product available at cost for the duration of the arrangement.
“We are offering a discount on petrol dispensed by NNPC Limited for the next 30 days in the first instance, with priority for public transporters nationwide. So, it’s not a subsidy, government is just saying we sell to you at cost,” he stated.
The minister said the decision was part of measures being considered by the government to cushion the impact of fuel costs on Nigerians, particularly those who depend on public transportation.
The temporary discount is expected to provide some relief to transport operators and commuters at a time when petrol prices continue to influence the cost of transportation and other essential goods and services.
Oyedele, however, maintained that the arrangement was different from the fuel subsidy regime previously operated by the government. He stressed that the current approach was designed to make the product available at cost rather than have government absorb a subsidy burden.
The announcement comes amid continuing efforts by the Federal Government to manage the effects of petrol prices on households and businesses while maintaining the reforms in the downstream petroleum sector.
Under the new arrangement, public transporters are expected to receive priority as the government seeks to ensure that the benefit of the discount translates into lower transportation costs for commuters.
The government is expected to provide further details on how the 30-day arrangement will be implemented, including the categories of public transport operators that will qualify and how the discount will be administered at NNPC retail outlets.
The temporary measure also places attention on the broader challenge of balancing market-based petrol pricing with the need to protect Nigerians from sharp increases in transportation and living costs.
