The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for a thorough investigation into the death of Etimbuk Daniel, former Students’ Union Government (SUG) president of Akwa Ibom State University, at a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Enugu State, following allegations of fake medication and delayed medical attention.

NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, made the call in a statement expressing grief over Daniel’s death and demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to Afeez, Daniel complained of a headache at the orientation camp and received medication from medical personnel. However, his condition reportedly deteriorated after taking the drugs.

The former student leader subsequently requested an urgent transfer to a hospital for further treatment, but the approval allegedly suffered delays. Afeez claimed that Daniel died before officials could take him to a hospital.

The NANS president further alleged that a doctor later identified the medication administered to Daniel as fake, raising concerns about the quality of medical care available at the camp.

“We were further informed that the doctor later identified the drugs administered to him as fake. These are deeply troubling allegations that require a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his tragic death,” Afeez stated.

The allegations concerning the authenticity of the medication and the reported delay in transferring Daniel to a hospital have not been independently verified. The circumstances surrounding his death remain subject to investigation.

Afeez described Daniel’s death as a painful loss to the Nigerian student community, noting his previous leadership role at Akwa Ibom State University.

“I received with rude shock the news of the death of Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Akwa Ibom State University, who reportedly passed away at the NYSC orientation camp in Enugu State,” he said.

The NANS president also expressed concern over the dangers posed by counterfeit medicines, calling for stronger measures to prevent unsafe drugs from reaching patients.

He said the reported circumstances of Daniel’s death raised questions about accountability and the provision of prompt medical attention to corps members who fall ill during orientation exercises.

The association extended its condolences to Daniel’s family, friends, former colleagues and the entire Akwa Ibom State University community.

“NANS is mourning this painful loss, and our further actions and official position on the matter will be communicated in due course,” Afeez said.

He also prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and the wider student community.
