The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has expanded its transmission capacity in the South-South by adding 635 megavolt-amperes (MVA) through new transformers installed at strategic substations in its Port Harcourt Transmission Region.
The expansion will enable the company to transmit more electricity to distribution companies and improve bulk power delivery to communities across the region.
The General Manager of TCN’s Port Harcourt Region, Nasiru Bello, disclosed this in an interview with TCN Transmission News on October 1, 2026. He also outlined ongoing projects aimed at easing transmission constraints and improving network reliability.
Bello said the new capacity marks a significant step in strengthening the region’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
The 635MVA addition comprises a 125MVA transformer at Port Harcourt Town Transmission Substation and two 125MVA units at Port Harcourt Main Transmission Substation.
TCN also installed a 125MVA transformer at Alaoji Transmission Substation, a 75MVA unit at Aba Transmission Substation and a 60MVA transformer at Itu Transmission Substation.
Beyond the completed installations, the company is pursuing additional projects to increase transmission capacity in other parts of the region.
In the Calabar Sub-Region, construction is ongoing at the Ekori and Obudu transmission substations, each designed to accommodate two 160MVA transformers.
Bello said work on the Ogoja Transmission Substation had reached about 90 per cent completion, bringing the project closer to readiness.
He also disclosed that TCN had finalised plans to build a new transmission substation in Oron, Akwa Ibom State. Site mobilisation and construction are expected to begin shortly.
The company is also carrying out routine maintenance and rehabilitating existing assets to improve equipment performance and reduce disruptions across its network.
According to Bello, these interventions will help minimise avoidable downtime and technical losses while strengthening the reliability of electricity transmission infrastructure.
The projects form part of TCN’s wider responsibility to expand and modernise Nigeria’s transmission network, enabling it to deliver more electricity to distribution load centres across the South-South and other parts of the country.
