The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has identified two additional suspected Ebola cases and 53 primary contacts as health authorities step up efforts to contain the disease.

The Director-General of the NCDC, Jide Idris, disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday.

He said the agency had identified the suspected cases and was tracking people who might have come into contact with the virus.

“We have established two additional suspected cases and 53 primary contact links. They are primary contacts. We have an isolation centre and a quarantine centre,” Idris said.

The agency has also strengthened its laboratory capacity to ensure prompt testing and investigation of suspected cases.

Idris said about 12 public and private laboratories could test for Ebola, providing additional capacity to detect infections and limit further transmission.

He added that the NCDC was maintaining heightened surveillance across the country to identify possible infections early.

The director-general urged healthcare facilities to improve screening and triage procedures and strengthen infection prevention measures. He also stressed the need to provide healthcare workers with adequate personal protective equipment.

Meanwhile, public health teams are identifying and monitoring people who may have been exposed to the confirmed case.

The NCDC said the monitoring period would last 21 days after each contact’s last possible exposure to the virus.

Idris appealed to Nigerians contacted by public health officials to cooperate fully with contact-tracing teams.

He urged them to provide accurate information about their movements, contacts and symptoms to help health authorities assess potential exposure and prevent further spread.
