United Nations Nigerian Association Appoints New Leadership

Joel Oladele, Abuja

The United Nations Staff Recreational Council Nigerian Association (UNSC Nigeria Association) has appointed a new leadership team, marking a significant moment for Nigerian expatriates working within the United Nations System.

Disclosing the development via a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Association, Koye Adeboye, he noted that it is dedicated to advancing the interests and well-being of Nigerian personnel and retirees within the United Nations community.

The UNSC Nigeria Association also serves as a vital platform for professional development, social networking, and cultural exchange among Nigerians and those interested in Nigeria’s affairs at the United Nations.

The statement revealed that a Strategic Planning and Monitoring Specialist at the United Nations Children’s Fund, Ms. Foluke Ojelabi, assumed the role of President of the association.

Speaking about her vision for the organization, Ms. Ojelabi stated, “our leadership team has one goal: to ensure that the United Nations is accessible to all Nigerians in New York and other cities where United Nations agencies are headquartered.”

Under the previous leadership of Mr. Abolade Sobola, an Accounts Specialist at the United Nations Population Fund, the association navigated challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining its commitment to community engagement through innovative virtual initiatives, such as the hugely-successful virtual DJ Afrobeats parties.

Mr. Sobola also highlighted the association’s achievements during his team’s tenure, including enhanced collaboration with the Nigeria Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the Consulate General in New York.

“We are grateful for the accomplishments of our predecessors and are committed to building upon their successes,” said Ms. Ojelabi, acknowledging the ongoing support of former leaders within the association.

Established in 2012, the United Nations Nigerian Association fosters social and cultural connections among current and former UN staff members in New York. It operates independently of any political affiliation, focusing solely on promoting professional and social interactions within the Nigerian community at the United Nations.
