The Federal Road Safety Corps has warned motorists across the country to desist from drunk driving, excessive speeding and reckless behaviour as Nigerians prepare to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the Corps had put in place all necessary operational and educational measures to ensure the safety of road users during the celebration.

In a statement signed on Wednesday in Abuja by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal disclosed that Commanding Officers nationwide had been directed to intensify patrols and enforce traffic laws strictly.

He ordered “massive deployment of Officers and Men for enhanced visibility, adequate traffic control, and maximum enforcement of all traffic regulations.”

The Corps Marshal also directed that operatives deploy breathalysers and radar guns to detect and stop traffic offenders, particularly drunk drivers and speed violators.

According to the statement, officers are to “go all out with breathalysers, and radar guns to ensure that suspected drunk drivers are tested and stopped from continuing their trips so as to avoid unnecessary deaths, injuries and damage to properties.”

Shehu Mohammed described Valentine’s Day as a global celebration of love and care in memory of Saint Valentine, but stressed that motorists must celebrate responsibly.

He warned that the Corps would not spare any driver caught violating traffic regulations during the festivities.

Motorists were advised to make use of the FRSC’s 122 toll-free line to report crashes, road obstructions or reckless driving for prompt intervention.

The Corps Marshal further urged all road users to cooperate with FRSC operatives deployed across the country, noting that their presence on the highways is to safeguard lives and property.

He also appealed to parents and guardians to caution their wards to conduct themselves responsibly during the celebrations, observing that youths are often more vulnerable during festive periods.
