NRC Increases Abuja–Kaduna Train Trips From March 6

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced an increase in the number of trips on the Abuja–Kaduna train service, citing growing passenger demand along the busy corridor.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the corporation’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the NRC said the revised timetable will take effect from March 6.

The corporation explained that the adjustment is aimed at offering commuters more travel options, improving operational flexibility and enhancing service delivery on the route, which remains one of the most patronised rail lines in the country.

The Abuja–Kaduna corridor had faced operational challenges in recent years. A bomb attack on March 28, 2022, and a derailment on August 26, 2025, disrupted services and forced the corporation to scale down operations.

According to the NRC, those incidents led to a reduction in available rolling stock from three trains to one, the introduction of Temporary Speed Restrictions (TSR) for safety reasons and a cut in the number of daily trips.

However, the corporation said stability has now been restored.

“With stability now restored and in response to sustained passenger demand, the corporation has expanded services to better meet the expectations of commuters, in addition to the earlier relaxation of some temporary speed restrictions,” the statement said.

Under the new schedule, passengers travelling between Idu and Rigasa will have three trips on Fridays, Sundays, Saturdays and Mondays, while two trips will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The NRC provided details of the revised timetable. “Specifically, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Idu–Rigasa service departs Idu at 8:45 a.m. and returns from Rigasa at 2:30 p.m. On Fridays and Sundays, three trips operate with departures from Idu at 7:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., and from Rigasa at 11:30 a.m,” the corporation stated.

It added that on Saturdays and Mondays, trains will depart Rigasa at 7:15 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and from Idu at 11:00 a.m., with all services making scheduled stops at Kubwa.

Passengers were advised to take note of the new timetable and plan their journeys accordingly.

The NRC reaffirmed its commitment to improving capacity, safety, reliability and overall passenger experience across its rail network as efforts continue to strengthen confidence in rail transportation.
