Calabar Gas Explosion Injures 60, Destroys Homes, Vehicles

No fewer than 60 people have been injured following a gas explosion that rocked parts of Calabar, the Cross River State capital, leaving a trail of destruction and panic among residents.

The incident occurred on Saturday at a private petrol and gas filling station located along Edibe Edibe Street in Calabar South Local Government Area.

Witnesses said the explosion triggered a massive fire that engulfed the facility, burning fuel storage tanks and several vehicles within the premises.

Confirming the development, police spokesperson in Cross River State, Eitokpah Sunday, said at least 31 victims who sustained severe burns are currently receiving treatment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

However, the Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, disclosed during a visit to the hospital on Sunday that the number of affected persons had risen to 60.

According to him, the state government is taking steps to manage the situation and ensure adequate medical care for the victims.

“Our visit is to assess the condition of those receiving treatment. Patients with minor injuries will be moved to the General Hospital in Calabar to reduce pressure on UCTH and allow for better care,” Ayuk said.

The commissioner, who was accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on General Duties, Ekpeyong Akiba, was received by the Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Ikpeme Ikpeme, who provided updates on the response efforts and treatment of victims.

Residents of the area said the explosion caused widespread damage, with nearby buildings affected by the intensity of the blast, while thick smoke covered parts of the neighbourhood.

Earlier, Governor Bassey Otu, who visited the scene, described the incident as devastating and assured victims of government support.

He said the state government would take full responsibility for the medical bills of those injured in the explosion.

Emergency responders were said to have swiftly moved in to contain the fire and evacuate victims, preventing further casualties.

Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the explosion, but investigations are expected to begin as part of efforts to prevent future occurrences.
