Tragedy struck at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), after the body of a 100-level student, Favour Olaniyi, was discovered in a bush near the institution’s North Gate under circumstances suspected to be linked to suicide.
The deceased, said to be 23 years old, was a student of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics.
Sources within the university community said the body was found in the early hours, with an empty bottle containing a substance suspected to be a harmful herbicide recovered near the scene.
The discovery threw students and residents around the area into shock, with many gathering in groups as news of the incident spread across the campus community.
Confirming the development, the Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol of FUTA, Adegbenro Adebanjo, described the incident as painful and unfortunate.
He said the institution had informed the deceased’s family while necessary steps were immediately taken after the matter was reported to the university management.
According to him, the university security unit promptly alerted the police, while medical personnel and security operatives coordinated the evacuation of the body to the mortuary.
Adebanjo stated that the institution was cooperating fully with security agencies investigating the incident.
He added that the Students Affairs Division had also commenced counselling support for students affected by the tragedy.
“The Students Affairs Division, FUTA, has always reiterated its readiness and willingness to provide support for students who may be battling with any issues and will continue to do so,” he said.
“Students are encouraged to take advantage of the availability of such counselling and guidance when they are faced with any issues on and off campus.”
The spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, Abayomi Jimoh, also confirmed the incident, saying detectives who visited the scene did not observe visible signs of violence on the body.
“The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and further examination while investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has commenced,” Jimoh stated.
He urged members of the public, especially young people, to seek counselling and emotional support during difficult moments instead of taking actions that could endanger their lives.
Police authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
