Bloody Christmas: Tears as over 100 killed in ethnic attacks in Plateau State

More than 100 people have been killed in farmer-herder attacks in Nigeria during the weekend. According to media reports, the attacks have happened in the central Nigerian state of Plateau.

Northwest and central Nigeria have been long terrorised by bandit militias operating from bases deep in forests and raiding villages to loot and kidnap residents for ransom.

The acting chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Kassah, said 113 people had been killed in the attacks on Saturday and Sunday.

“The attacks were well-coordinated. Not fewer than 20 different communities were attacked by the bandits,” he said.

“We have recovered 113 dead bodies from those communities. We have recovered more than 300 injured.”

Lamenting the rate of insecurity in Plateau State, NATIONAL PERISCOPE noted  an X user, KWEKU THE HUSTLER  who posted “As you celebrate Christmas, villages in Plateau state are being brutally sacked by Fulani terrorists on Christmas day. Families are being butchered, and homes are being burnt. That is what Nigeria gave them for Christmas.

“Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

Another X user, Dr. Barry Avotu Johnson 1st while reacting to the shocking video of the massacre wrote “See how they kill Nigerians like rats and the government said nothing on this ?

Is this the Nigeria that we call united and peaceful ?

A whole village killed ?

Do we have a government in Nigeria at all ?

Who is in charge of Nigeria for crying out loud ?

Do you think if the owners of these people start off their revenge it will be something that will be easy ?

Why don’t we talk about this and find a way to stop this wickedness of killing a whole village ?

A word is enough for a while.

Let’s not allow this nonsense to continue.

If we start, nobody can hold us back jooh.

Nobody can handle any killing machine more than US ooh.

Nigeria doesn’t belong to one person oh.

Don’t allow us spoil this sweet nation called  Nigeria.”

Plateau is one of several ethnically and religiously diverse hinterland states known as Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where inter-communal conflict has claimed hundreds of lives in recent years.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International has criticised the Nigerian authorities, stating that they “have been failing to end frequent deadly attacks on rural communities of Plateau state.”

Earlier this month, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu ordered an investigation into a military drone strike that claimed the lives of 85 civilians gathered for a religious celebration.

Kaduna Governor Uba Sani clarified that the civilians were mistakenly killed by a drone targeting “terrorists and bandits” during the operation.
