Terrorists’ IED Kills Commanding Officer, Six Other Soldiers in Borno

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, have suffered a major setback following the death of a Commanding Officer and six soldiers in an improvised explosive device (IED) incident after a terrorist attack in Monguno, Borno State.

The incident, which occurred late on April 12, 2026, was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Uba Sani.

According to the statement, troops of Sector 3 came under what was described as an isolated attack by terrorists at the Charlie 13 location in Monguno.

The military, however, said its troops responded decisively, engaging the insurgents in a fierce exchange of gunfire and eventually forcing them to retreat from the area.

“Following intense fire exchanges, the terrorists were put to flight, with troops maintaining control of the location,” the statement said.

Tragedy struck shortly after the confrontation when the Commanding Officer, who was said to have moved towards the frontline to assess the situation, ran into an improvised explosive device.

“Regrettably, the Commanding Officer, while courageously proceeding to the troops’ location to personally assess the situation, encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which severely affected his vehicle, leading to his death alongside six other gallant personnel,” the military disclosed.

The statement paid glowing tribute to the fallen officer, describing his actions as a demonstration of exceptional leadership and bravery.

It noted that his decision to move towards the troops even after the immediate threat had been neutralised reflected the highest traditions of military service, including courage, selflessness, and leading from the front.

“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of his men,” the statement added.

Operation HADIN KAI expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the officer and the six soldiers, noting that their sacrifice would not be forgotten.

“Their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served,” it stated.

The military reiterated its resolve to sustain ongoing operations against insurgents in the North East, assuring that efforts to restore peace and security in the region would continue despite the loss.
