FCT Corrections Command Reunites Ex-Inmate with Community
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has reunited a reformed ex-inmate with his community in Gwagwalada, reinforcing efforts to promote rehabilitation and reduce repeat offences.
The initiative, led by the Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, Christopher Peter Jen, saw Abdulkadir Mohammed formally handed over to the Aguma of Gwagwalada as part of structured reintegration programmes designed to support former inmates after release.
Abdulkadir, a native of the area, completed a four-year, four-month custodial sentence during which he acquired practical skills in shoe-making.

At the handover ceremony, he presented a pair of shoes he produced while in custody to the traditional authority, symbolising his transformation and readiness to rebuild his life.
To further support his transition, the Correctional Service provided him with a shoe-finishing machine to help him establish a livelihood.
Speaking at the event, Jen urged the community to embrace the ex-inmate and provide him with the necessary support to succeed, including access to space for his trade.
“This handover underscores our shared goal of turning custodial sentences into opportunities for transformation,” he said. “We call on all stakeholders to support these reformed individuals in building productive lives.”
He also cautioned against the stigmatisation of former inmates, stressing that negative societal attitudes could undermine rehabilitation gains and hinder reintegration efforts.
Representing the Aguma, Bala Waziri commended the Correctional Service for its commitment to reform and pledged community support for Abdulkadir’s fresh start.
He also acknowledged the leadership of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, for advancing initiatives focused on inmate rehabilitation and post-release reintegration.
Waziri noted that the programme reflects a shift in the correctional philosophy from punishment to transformation, urging members of the public to support such efforts in the interest of societal safety.
The event highlights ongoing reforms within the Nigerian Correctional Service aimed at equipping inmates with vocational skills and strengthening partnerships with communities to ensure sustainable reintegration and reduce recidivism.
