Two young Nigerians performing on stage at the K-Heritage Festival held in Abuja on Saturday

The Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria has stepped up efforts to strengthen cultural exchange between Nigeria and South Korea through the Abuja edition of the K-Heritage Festival, an event focused on promoting traditional Korean music, dance and cultural education.

Organisers said the initiative was aimed at exposing Nigerians to Korea’s rich traditional heritage beyond the globally popular K-Pop culture that has gained a massive following among young audiences.

Speaking during the festival, Event Manager at the centre, Yoonjin Lee, explained that the programme was created to showcase the deeper cultural identity of Korea through performances and interactive learning sessions.

According to her, the festival was first introduced in Lagos in 2025 before expanding to Abuja this year as part of efforts to widen cultural engagement across Nigeria.

“K-Pop is more like the modern type, more attracted by young people. But the K-Heritage Festival is trying to also bring Korean traditional performances to Nigeria,” she said.

This year’s edition featured performances by Sorichum, a Korean performance duo made up of Melissa Minseong Seo and Hyunjung Park, who thrilled audiences with traditional Korean music and dance routines.

The festival also included practical workshops where participants were introduced to Korean fan dance and the traditional Korean drum known as Janggu.

Lee disclosed that the workshops lasted for two days ahead of the festival and ended with live stage performances by participating students.

She expressed excitement over the level of enthusiasm shown by Nigerians who took part in the cultural sessions.

“The students only learned for two days, but they performed perfectly. People are really enjoying it,” she said.

According to her, the growing audience participation reflects increasing interest among Nigerians in Korean traditional arts and not only contemporary entertainment.

She noted that the cultural centre was committed to presenting different aspects of Korean heritage through music, dance and cultural experiences.

“We really want to show different stages of Korean culture. K-Pop is very big, but as a Korean Cultural Centre, we also want to bring traditions and opportunities for people to experience them,” Lee added.

Beyond performances, the event also featured presentations by students of the cultural centre and winners from previous K-Pop festivals organised in Nigeria.

Lee said the K-Heritage Festival currently focuses mainly on performance arts such as traditional music and fan dance, although Korean culture also extends into crafts and other artistic traditions.

She added that organisers were considering expanding the initiative through additional workshops and festivals, particularly in Lagos, where another Janggu drum festival is already being planned.

According to her, the centre also intends to strengthen traditional cultural classes in Nigeria before eventually introducing K-Heritage competitions in the future.

However, she clarified that most competitive activities for now remain centred around K-Pop events.

Lee further announced that another K-Pop Festival would be held later this year in Lagos as part of efforts to rotate major programmes between Lagos and Abuja for wider participation.

The K-Heritage Festival forms part of broader cultural diplomacy efforts aimed at deepening people-to-people relations between Nigeria and South Korea through arts, music and cultural exchange.
