Former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, days after suffering a heavy defeat in the party’s Delta Central senatorial primary election.

Omo-Agege announced his resignation in a letter dated May 22, 2026, and addressed to the APC chairman of Orogun Ward 2 in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

His decision was conveyed in a statement issued Wednesday by his media adviser, Sunday Areh.

The resignation comes on the heels of the APC primary election in Delta Central Senatorial District where the former lawmaker lost overwhelmingly to the incumbent senator, Ede Dafinone, during the direct primary conducted across the eight local government areas of the district.

According to results announced by the secretary of the APC National Assembly Primary Committee for Delta State, Nusa Amagbor, Dafinone polled 116,252 votes to defeat Omo-Agege, who secured 3,643 votes. The exercise was conducted using the Option A4 voting system.

Political observers in Delta State had described the outcome as a major setback for Omo-Agege, who previously represented Delta Central in the Senate for two terms before emerging Deputy Senate President in the 9th National Assembly.

In his resignation letter, the former senator said recent developments within the APC in Delta State forced him to reconsider his membership of the ruling party.

“After reviewing recent developments within the APC in Delta State and consulting with my associates and supporters, it is clear that my political objectives and those of my constituents are better served outside the party,” he stated.

Omo-Agege added that he could no longer remain in a political platform where he was unable to advance the interests of his people.

“I will not remain a sitting duck in a party where I cannot advance the interests of Delta Central, Delta State and Nigeria,” he declared.

Despite his exit, the former lawmaker expressed gratitude to the APC for the opportunity to serve as Deputy President of the Senate, wishing the party well in its future activities.

He also disclosed that he had requested the removal of his name from all APC membership records and communication platforms.

Omo-Agege maintained that his political focus remained the development of Delta Central and the broader interest of the country, insisting that he would continue to pursue those goals outside the APC.

The resignation is expected to deepen political realignments already building up in Delta State ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially following growing internal tensions within the APC after the party’s recent primaries.
