The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of Democracy Day, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening democratic governance and national unity.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, and made on behalf of the Federal Government.

According to the statement, the declaration reflects the continued national significance of June 12, which honours the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose struggles helped entrench democratic rule in the country.

“June 12 remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democratic governance possible in this country,” the statement noted, adding that the legacy of such efforts continues to shape the values of the Nigerian state.

The Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, was quoted as reaffirming the administration’s commitment to democratic ideals, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

He stressed that the government would continue to uphold these principles without compromise, as part of efforts to deepen democratic practice and national development.

The Ministry of Interior also assured that, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, it would sustain measures aimed at ensuring internal security and the protection of lives and property across the country.

It noted that a secure and stable environment remains essential to the functioning of democracy and the broader goal of national progress.

The Minister called on Nigerians to use the occasion of the holiday for reflection on civic responsibilities, urging citizens to recommit to lawful conduct, responsible engagement, and national unity.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.

The Federal Government urged citizens to observe the holiday peacefully while reflecting on the importance of democratic governance in sustaining national cohesion and development.
