The Republic of Ireland has deported 42 South African nationals in what authorities described as the latest phase of its immigration enforcement programme.
The deportees, who departed Dublin aboard a specially chartered flight, arrived in Johannesburg on Friday, according to a report by DW Africa.
Those returned comprised nine men, 18 women and 15 children, all travelling as family units.
Irish authorities disclosed that two members of the group had previously been convicted of offences in the country.
The deportation operation was carried out by Ireland’s Department of Justice, which said it was the fourth chartered removal flight conducted this year.
Officials noted that the latest exercise formed part of ongoing efforts to enforce immigration regulations and remove individuals who no longer had legal grounds to remain in the country.
The department further revealed that 130 people had earlier been deported from Ireland in previous operations this year, many of them on grounds linked to criminal convictions.
While details surrounding the immigration status of the affected South Africans were not immediately disclosed, authorities maintained that the removals were conducted in accordance with existing legal procedures.
The development triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many users drawing attention to longstanding debates around migration, xenophobia and the treatment of foreign nationals in different countries.
Some commentators referenced past incidents of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, while others questioned perceptions about migration and crime among African communities abroad.
The deportation comes as several European countries continue to tighten immigration enforcement measures amid growing political and public scrutiny of migration policies.
