‘Tinubu Is Nigeria’s Problem, Not EFCC Chairman’ – Adebayo

Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, not the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), should resign over the controversy surrounding the freezing of Osun State’s accounts.

Adebayo at a press conference in Abuja,stated that the President’s reported directive ordering the anti-graft agency to unfreeze the accounts amounted to interference in the legal process and undermined the rule of law.

He defended EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede,
insisting the commission acted within powers granted by law and under judicial supervision.

“I will not join any call for the EFCC chairman to resign. The person who should resign is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

According to him, anyone dissatisfied with the freezing of the accounts should seek redress in court rather than pressure the President to intervene.
He argued that if the President indeed directed the EFCC to withdraw its action, such conduct would amount to political interference in an independent law enforcement process.

Adebayo maintained that the SDP had consistently respected law enforcement institutions even when they acted against members of the party, stressing that legal remedies not political pressureshould resolve disputes.

He also criticised President Tinubu’s response to recent concerns raised by Catholic bishops, accusing him of failing to demonstrate the temperament expected of a national leader.

The SDP flag bearer further dismissed attempts to blame Northern Nigeria for the country’s challenges, insisting the region possesses enormous agricultural, mineral and human resources capable of driving national prosperity under responsible leadership.

On the 2027 elections, Adebayo said Nigerians across party lines were united by the desire for a change in leadership, insisting that President Tinubu must leave office through constitutional means.
