TCN Commissions 150MVA Transformer to Boost Power Supply in Port Harcourt

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a new 150MVA, 330/132/33kV power transformer at its Afam IV Transmission Substation in Rivers State, doubling the facility’s transformation capacity and increasing its ability to transmit electricity to Port Harcourt and surrounding areas.

The project, commissioned on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, increased the substation’s transformation capacity from 120MVA to 240MVA, according to a statement issued by TCN management on Thursday.

TCN said the additional transformer would strengthen its transmission capacity to the load centre of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC), enabling the DisCo to receive more electricity for onward distribution to consumers.

The development is expected to improve the capacity of the electricity network serving Port Harcourt metropolis and neighbouring communities by easing constraints at the transmission substation.

According to TCN, the project forms part of the ongoing TCN-World Bank power projects aimed at expanding and strengthening Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure.

The company said the increased transformation capacity at Afam IV would provide greater headroom for electricity off-take by PHEDC, supporting improved power distribution to homes and businesses within its franchise area.

The commissioning comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and power sector stakeholders to address transmission constraints that have limited the amount of electricity that can be delivered from generating plants to distribution networks.

TCN has continued to undertake transmission infrastructure projects, including the installation of new transformers and expansion of existing substations, as part of efforts to improve the reliability and capacity of the national grid.

The Afam IV project is expected to strengthen the transmission network in the Niger Delta and provide additional capacity to accommodate increased electricity supply to Port Harcourt and its environs.

With the new transformer now in service, TCN said the expanded capacity would enable PHEDC to off-take more available electricity and distribute it to consumers across its network.
