No fewer than eight persons, including nursing mothers and children, are feared trapped following the collapse of a two-storey building in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Tuesday.
The building collapsed at about 5:30 a.m. in the Popo-Giwa area of Mosalasi Gogoro, off Ajikobi Road, in Ilorin West Local Government Area.
Residents said the collapse triggered panic in the community as fears grew that several people might still be trapped beneath the rubble.
Among those reportedly trapped are nursing mothers and children, according to eyewitnesses who spoke on the incident.
Rescue efforts were immediately launched at the scene, with residents joining emergency personnel in an attempt to locate and evacuate those believed to be trapped.
Personnel of the Kwara State Fire Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and officials of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) were at the site as rescue operations continued.
The cause of the building collapse was not immediately known as of the time of filing this report.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Kwara State Police Command and officials involved in the rescue operation were unsuccessful.
The incident comes amid recurring concerns over building safety and compliance with construction standards in parts of the country, with authorities often urging developers and property owners to adhere to approved building regulations.
