FRSC Clarifies Kano Crash Death Toll, Says Seven Killed, Not 30

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has corrected reports on a recent road traffic crash in Kano State, confirming that seven persons lost their lives, contrary to claims in some sections of the media that 30 people were killed.

In a statement signed on Monday by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps said the casualty figure was based on on-the-spot assessment and verified rescue operations carried out by its operatives at the scene.

The FRSC urged the public and media organisations to rely on officially confirmed information, warning that inaccurate reports could create unnecessary panic and mislead the public.

The fatal crash occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at about 8:33 a.m. along Hadejia Road, Kwanar Danja, in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State. It involved a commercial DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG, which was conveying 105 passengers.

According to the Corps, out of the 105 persons involved in the crash, 70 sustained varying degrees of injuries, while 30 were rescued without injuries. Those injured comprised 55 adult males and 15 male children, while the seven fatalities were all adult males.

Preliminary investigation by the FRSC attributed the crash to speed violation, which led to loss of control by the driver.

Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described speeding as one of the deadliest traffic violations on Nigerian roads.

“Once a driver exceeds the prescribed speed limit, control is compromised, reaction time is reduced, and the chances of survival in a crash become minimal,” he said, stressing that no journey is worth the loss of innocent lives.

Mohammed added that the high number of casualties recorded in a single crash highlights the dangers of reckless driving. “Vehicles driven at excessive speed become lethal weapons capable of wiping out entire families in seconds,” he warned.

The Corps Marshal further stated that the FRSC would continue to intensify enforcement operations nationwide, noting that motorists who violate speed regulations would face the full weight of the law without exception.

The FRSC called on all road users, particularly commercial drivers, to obey speed limits and drive responsibly, emphasising that speed limits are designed to save lives and should not be ignored.
