NDC Condemns Alleged Attack On Peter Obi In Benue

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned an alleged attack on its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State on Tuesday.

The party said suspected thugs blocked Obi’s convoy and prevented him from entering Yelwata community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed in a recent attack.

In a statement signed by the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the party alleged that an aide to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, led the group that obstructed Obi’s visit.

According to the NDC, the suspected thugs carried dangerous weapons and chanted “Peter Obi, go back” as they stopped his convoy from proceeding into the community.

Obi had travelled to Yelwata to sympathise with families affected by the killings and listen to their concerns.

“I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity,” Obi said, according to the statement.

The NDC said the alleged obstruction was particularly troubling because Obi’s visit centred on victims of violence and their families.

The party said the former Anambra State governor also intended to hear from affected residents on measures needed to prevent further loss of lives.

It argued that political differences should not stand in the way of solidarity with communities facing tragedy.

The NDC said residents of Benue and Nigerians across the country deserved security and the freedom to go about their daily activities without fear.

“Benue and all Nigerians deserve to live, sleep peacefully, travel safely, and farm their lands without fear,” the party said.

It maintained that protecting human life should remain the government’s foremost responsibility, regardless of political considerations.

Although Obi could not enter Yelwata, the NDC said his concern for the victims and their families remained unchanged.

The party vowed to continue pressing for stronger protection of lives and property across the country.

It also called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident and identify those behind the alleged obstruction.

The NDC urged the authorities to prosecute anyone found culpable and ensure that citizens and public officials can visit communities affected by violence without intimidation.

The party said it would remain committed to advocating the protection of Nigerians and seeking accountability over attacks that threaten peaceful communities.
